Once the foundations exist, AI governance adds capabilities that reflect how AI behaves and how it changes over time.
These include:
- Model performance management: Tracking performance over time, not only at release.
- Risk tiering: Classifying systems by risk level (including EU AI Act categories) so controls match the stakes.
- Human oversight: Defining where people must review, approve, or intervene.
- Monitoring drift and bias: Detecting when behavior shifts due to changing data, usage, or context.
- Explainability: Providing enough visibility to understand and challenge outputs when it matters.
- Real-time controls for live applications: Guardrails and operational controls that work during everyday usage, not only in offline review.
